Allan Kendall Photography’s Blog
Behind the scenes, Gear, Techniques and the Business of Photography
This is the third month of the year and the third blog post I have written this year. At the start of 2018 I set myself the not so difficult task of writing one blog post a month for the whole year (12 in total incase you needed clarification!!). In this post I talk about my one year journey so far as a self employed photographer and some of the things I have learned along the way.
As a Commercial Photographer, a quick turnaround is beneficial - sending finished images (or proof images) online is the norm. My workflow often include creating a proof pdf with low res images (and filenames) along with copyright data. I send it off to the client and get a list of selected images to work up. For a long time I used Dropbox to deliver my images but now I use WeTransfer almost exclusively.
What is a pixel and how does it relate to image size? Are my images optimised for web sites? What do photographers do to prepare their images for websites? a short introduction to pixel dimensions, including example images and a walkthrough video.
Life has been a bit of a rollercoaster lately. I wanted to write a post to stick a pin in all the stuff that has happened over the past year or so and mark my 'starting position' as a freelance commercial photographer!
Photographs of the Specialist Rescue Team on a training day honing their skills on Brean Down, in Somerset.
An example of the processing work I do using Photoshop (this is sped up, I don't actually work quite this fast!)
I had a fun day recently hanging out with some friends who run an IT consultancy business - Maven Consultancy are awesome and worth a look if you need IT support, Web sites, Social media management etc etc. you can find them here: www.mavenconsultancy.com
I have recently been using my portable studio setup to visit business and shoot the unique and interesting products they manufacture, from water baths to model railway display cases. These images can be used on websites, online shops and billboards.
If you would like your products photographed please get in touch and lets work something out.
I had an awesome day watching Zoe from ZL Dance run a brilliantly energetic dance party for kids recently. Just editing the images and wanted to share a quick screen capture, I can't wait to share more.
The core of any backup system is the very important fact that to be a proper backup you have to have your file copied in more than one place. If you change one file then you also need to change the copy. I have friends who buy an external usb drive as their ‘backup’ drive and move their files onto it basically to free up space on their laptop… this is not a backup people!! If you lost access to that hard drive then you would lose your files.
